About Dr. Sula Vanderplank


Sula is a biodiversity explorer for the Botanical Research Institute of Texas, who focuses on field botany, natural history, and conservation science in Baja California. She actively collaborates both sides of the border and has appointments at Terra Peninsular, Scripps Oceanographic Institute, and the San Diego Natural History Museum. For the last eight years Sula has published broadly on the flora of this region including a field guide to quail-friendly plants, and coauthoring a field guide to the Maritime Succulent Scrub of Baja California. Sula has worked on the Pacific Islands of Baja California since 2008, and recently began some research on the islands in the Gulf of California.  She received her Ph.D. from the University of California, Riverside where she studied under Dr. Exequiel Ezcurra, one of Mexico's leading conservation scientists.
